Somedays you just need to have a fun activity to do with your kids. This Preschool Color Mixing activity is definitely one of them.
My daughter is obsessed with everything artsy and this activity did not disappoint. It’s such a fun twist on the typical “mix the paint” situation!
Keep in mind this activity takes a bit of prep work because you will need to have it freezing the night before you use it, but it was a hit with the kids!

What do I need for this preschool color mixing activity?

How to set up this Preschool Sensory Activity?
The NIGHT before you do this activity you will need to do all of the prep work! So, keep that in mind when Planning out any preschool homeschool activities.
Fill the ice cube trays up with water and add the drops of food coloring to the individual cubes.
I would recommend stirring the color into the water with a small spoon or toothpick, otherwise you could end up with only a small spot of the cube being the actual color.
Put them in the freezer.
The next day you can grab your bowls or Tupperware and pop the colorful ice cubes out. I would recommend clear Tupperware for the mixing part
How to do the Color Mixing activity?
The prep work the night before is the hard part. Now you get to play with your kids and do a fun sensory activity! All WHILE they learn about mixing different colors together to create new colors.
You can do this activity a couple different ways.
First way: You can wait and have them melt on their own.
This is great if you child is patient. Select a few ice cubes to observe as they melt to discover what colors they create. I would recommend letting your child play with the rest of the ice cubes that aren’t in use. This keeps them occupied as you wait for them to melt and mix.
Second Way: Add water to Make them Melt faster and Mix Instantly
This is the way we did it. We chose the colors we wanted to mix together. Then set by set we put them in their own little bowl or cup and poured hot water over them to see what color they made!
Just remember this is a fun activity for the kids to do and they are able to learn at the same time! So roll with any hiccups that may occur and remember to have fun while you do it!
