Has anyone ever cleaned their dishwasher or wondered how to clean your dishwasher?
I have a confession, I only recenlty started doing this!
At first, washing my dishwasher felt a little bit like Monica on Friends. Where she had her vacuuming vacuum to get her apartment floors, but then her mini vacuum which she used to clean her vacuum!
Ha! Can you tell what my favorite show is?
Monica Geller felling aside, it actually is something you should clean! After all, it gets your dishes, the things you eat off of, clean!

What you need to clean your Dishwasher
First things first, this is what you will need:
- Vinegar
- Baking Soda
- Glass Bowl
How to Clean Your Dishwasher
You will want to start by making sure you have your current dishes clean and emptied.
I absolutely hate it when dirty dishes are in the sink longer than they ‘have’ to be so I would recommend running it and emptying it so you can start with a “clean slate” … pun completely intended.
Removing the Filter
Now you will need to find the filter, it’s usually on the bottom of the dishwasher. I would recommend removing the bottom rack to make it a bit easier for you to get to.
Prepare to be grossed out – which can be hard to do for most of us moms who seem to have run the gambit of gross things while raising littles, but still, brace yourself!
Once you remove your filter you can use some dish soap and a scrubber to clean it all up and then run water over it to rinse it out. If it’s too small for the scrubber you can always use a toothbrush.
Once it’s all cleaned up, make sure the spot it goes into in the dishwasher is clean and empty and then put it back in the dishwasher.
Make sure you remember to put it back! Super important to do before moving on!
Cleaning the Dishwasher itself
Now you will want to take some vinegar in a spray bottle (I use one similar to this) and spray it all over the Dishwasher. I’m talking the top, bottom, sides, dish racks… if it’s in the dishwasher spray it with Vinegar.
Then you will need to take some baking soda and sprinkle it throughout the dishwasher and scrub. You can use a brush or a sponge, whatever will work for you, just make sure you scrub. You will hear a fizzy sound, it’s just the baking soda and vinegar reacting to each other.
Make sure you do the same thing to the racks in the dishwasher if you took them out.
Almost Done! – Last Step
Next take a bowl with 1 cup of vinegar and put it on the top rack (or middle rack if you have 3 racks like mine does) and run it on a HOT full cycle.
Voila, You now have a clean Dishwasher!
