Hi Everyone!
I am loving this do it yourself movement that has come into the spotlight these past few years. I am obsessed with it and I was so happy when Alma, an Independent Chalk Couture designer, reached out to me. I had never heard of chalk couture before but the second I saw what it was all about I knew I had to try it!
I was sent this Chalk Couture kit in exchange for this DIY post. This doesn’t impact my opinion of the products at all. I will always give you my honest opinion on anything I share.
If you’re like me, your first thought was, what is Chalk Couture? It is all about everyone and anyone being able to create their own beautifully designed chalkboards, easily, all on their own. It lets everyone attain the beautiful shabby chic look at home without having a “Pinterest fail” moment because the product is designed for all skill levels.
Look at my chalkboard. I absolutely love it! The crazy part, I did everything in less than 25 minutes. I’m talking about starting the timer from the moment I started opening the product and ending it the moment I finished cleaning up. That is how insanely easy this product is to use.
Do It Yourself Chalkboard
What I used in my kit was a magnetic chalkboard (which in and of itself is a fun attribute for a chalkboard), Chalk Paste in the color Thai Teal, a Chalk Transfer that says “Together is our favorite place to be” and a small Squeegee.
The first thing you have to do is get your chalk transfer ready. A chalk transfer is basically like an amazing stencil for the chalk paste that makes it SUPER easy to use and SUPER hard to have a “Pinterest Fail” moment. What I did was peel off the back, do a process that is called”fuzzing” (when you dab a cloth on the adhesive side), then applied it to the chalkboard.
I spent most of my time over analyzing if I truly was in the center of the board. Once I was convinced I had my placement right it took maybe 5 seconds to have it secured to the chalkboard.
Once the chalk transfer is places you take the squeegee, get some of the chalk paste on it, and spread a thin even layer of chalk over the transfer itself.
When you do this make sure you get the small detail areas well. At first I wasn’t paying attention to the little arrows on mine. I had put the chalk on much lighter on the arrows then elsewhere. That was super easy to check and fix.
Once you are done with your chalk paste, slowly lift up the chalk transfer. If you notice that the chalk doesn’t look how you wanted it to simply lay it back down and apply more chalk paste (that’s how I fixed my arrow).
Voila, you just made a beautiful chalkboard sign for your home!
When you pull up the transfer you want to wash it off in warm water and then wipe both sides with a sanitizing wipe to help it last longer. Then you can re-use the transfer as desired. Plus it’s chalk, so after a while if you want a new design on the chalkboard you can wipe that off too!
My Overall Thoughts on Chalk Couture
I was beyond impressed with how easy it was to actually use. When I initially looked at some of the boards that were created by other’s who used Chalk Couture I thought it would be so difficult and mine would pale in comparison. The writing was perfect and the design was beautiful, how on earth could I re-create that? My daughter has a chalkboard at home, and we often ‘play chalkboard’ as she calls it. So I knew what I could do with chalk. It wasn’t much past a doddle of a bunny in the grass. I thought for sure the product would be complicated to use, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.
I also loved that the chalkboard was magnetic! I just thought that was a fun feature to have! That coupled with the fact that you could wipe it all off and re-use the board and transfer was a huge plus in my book. This lets you change up your decor without having to literally get all new things!
Plus the color of the chalk paste couldn’t have matched my decor better. There certainly is a wide variety of chalk paste colors available to choose from, but I do think my favorite is the one I received called Thai Teal.
This is definitely something that you could have fun with when it comes to jazzing up your home decor. I think this would be super fun for holiday specific transfers.
Overall I really loved the product and definitely plan on using it again in the future!
